What an xG value represents
Each shot is assigned an estimated chance of becoming a goal based on characteristics of the attempt. Those shot values can then be added together to create a team's xG total for the match.
An xG total is an estimate, not a prediction that the team should have scored exactly that number of goals.
Why xG can add context
Final scores can be noisy. A team can score three goals from a small number of difficult chances, while another team can create many strong chances and finish with zero. xG helps describe the underlying chance quality behind those outcomes.
xG and goals markets
For Over/Under and BTTS analysis, recent xG for and against can support traditional statistics such as actual goals, scoring frequency and clean sheets. It can help identify whether recent scorelines are broadly supported by chance creation.
Do not use xG alone
Different xG models can produce different values, and xG does not capture every tactical factor. It is best treated as one input within a broader model rather than a standalone betting signal.
Responsible betting
Football probabilities are estimates, not guarantees. Past results do not ensure future performance. Never stake money you cannot afford to lose and use licensed operators where gambling is legal for you.
